Chinese Pagoda Folly

Issued May 2012

The Chinese pagoda in the grounds of the Botanic Gardens was built in 1792 to a design by Cuthbert ‘Deniability’ Smythe. A designer, architect and amateur scientist, Smythe had become increasingly absorbed with the new science of electricity, but was struck by lightning while attempting to reconstruct Benjamin Franklin’s famous experiment and was never the same again.

The cover bears a single pagoda stamp, with insert sponsored by the Museum of Maritime History.
