2006 – 2012 Sportens

Following on from the 2005 Sporten set, there was an annual stamp featuring a single sport and its champions from 2006 to 2012. A fuller description and some background to Laernu can be found in the Guide to Laernu Sportens brochure which was available with the purchase of complete sheets. The stamps have appeared on this world in five batches; the 2006-2010 stamps three times as tantalising cover decorations and extras with some interesting print variations, before finally as sheets of stamps; and then the 2011-12 stamps in Sept 2012. These latter issues must be considered the definitive issue to which the tasters are compared. The preview glimpses of these stamps came in Feb 2011, Aug 2011, and June 2012, with the 2006-10 sheets becoming available in Aug 2012. All instances appear to come from different print runs.

The initial issue of these stamps was accompanied by a Guide to the Laernu Sportens, which gave the background to the issue in general, and the sports and people featured on the stamps. These were followed up by the 2011 and two 2012 stamps The 2011 10F ‘Cinquenloopen’. Every few years, assuming enough people are interested, athletes from all over Laernu meet to take part in the national games, introduced by Charlie Harborne ‘for a bit of a laugh’ on his third visit. In addition to the now traditional sack, egg and spoon and three-legged races there are opportunities for new sports to be tried by Laernu’s fittest and strongest. This year the 5 Loops or Cinquenloopen was a demonstration event. Featured here, pipe smoking, is optional. The 2012 3F ‘Nolookendownun’stamps is enough to make your hair fall out (or off)., while the 6f ‘Pedallenpuffen’ Special Issue commemorates Waggley Bigguns, the only person in Laernu to ever be featured on two stamps. Bigguns continued to benefit from the continual, incremental, small improvements to his bicycle design that had driven his career, winning pretty much every competitive event he entered. A special minisheet of four stamps showing stages of the design development was also issued and these are now very hard to find. (Unless you know where to ask).

With regard to early issues it is probable that not all variations have been released, noticed or declared. However it cannot be inferred that because a sheet variant design exists as a prototype, the regular design also exists. This listing only includes those stamps and variations identified. There are colour variations over time, though the variations in stamp size do not correlate with print issue. The actual stamp image seems to be consistent at 25x19mm; it is the stamps’ border size that varies. The stamps of the sheet issues are nominally 30x24mm. However due to the ‘artisan’ printing in Laernu the dimensions of the stamps can be ± 1mm. There are design variations on each sheet, with one sheet in particular showing multiple variations in combinations. Additionally print variations abound, and may involve the ordinary stamp or the sheet variation. Stamps also exist in alternative colours (but see next paragraph); while specimen stamps overprinted TESTEN NOTTEN RELEASEN occur. In other words this issue is a nightmare to catalogue. At least there doesn’t seem to be any perforation differences!

Notes on the earlier releases, before the sheets were issued. The Rollenerollen earlier stamps were in a brighter violet compared to the sheet stamps. The Early Ladiskooten stamps were yellow compared to the more orange later issue. Both Twangthunken stamps were a bright turquoise compared to the duller colour of the sheets. The Hitfaroutdunk stamps were also in a brighter shade on the early issues. The original Batsenbowlen stamps were a bright mauve (when a print variation didn’t recolour the entire stamp) compare to the purple of the sheets. Additionally the three cricketers stamp had a much smaller picture on the first stamps. And there seems to be missing balls variant on some copies of this stamp. Some of the print variations from the early batches re-appeared in later issues.

The stamps are 30mm x 24 mm and were printed and perforated 11 in the UK
